Podcasting - The Hottest Thing In Radio!

APPLE CEO STEVE JOBS promoted Podcasting in his keynote at the APPLE WORLDWIDE DEVELOPERS' CONFERENCE in SAN FRANCISCO MONDAY (6/6), calling it "the hottest thing going in radio" and previewing iTUNES version 4.9, which will include a directory of Podcasts and the ability for Podcasters to register their shows with the service. JOBS said that the new version of iTUNES will make Podcasting "mainstream."

A hem. Excuse me Mr. Jobs...

Podcasting has nothing to do with radio, or broadcasting for that matter. Podcasts are not real time, nor do they involve live listener interaction. They are canned, and that is their only flaw.

The fact that iTunes will now include the directory of 1000's of Podcasts is amazing and a smart move. The fact that we Podcasters can register our Podcasts is fantastic.

Truth. Every radio station and radio show in America that is trying to stand on the old foot of "we play music" is slowly loosing their foothold too modern technology. Their fingernails are grasping on the tiny ledge of those of us who do not have an iPod or the ability, or desire, to play mp3's in our car.

Podcasts still do not have the ability to deliver live news as it happens, or the traffic report on your morning commute. You can't do a live talk show with a Podcast, or have any live listener interaction, which is one of the largest draws of radio. Check your ratings, I guarantee your market has a news station and a talk station as the top stations in the market.

Small market radio stations that do not need to supply news or traffic are seriously at risk of loosing valuable cume, especially those "Music Intensive" radio stations.

Podcasts do have many attractive advantages, and as a veteran broadcaster I can tell you that they are fresh and exciting. You are not restricted by the jerks and the vague laws of the FCC that have crippled rock radio. You are not restricted by your advertisers, at least not yet. You do not need to surrender to a broadcast company’s policy in order to perform your show. You can turn on your home computer, record your show, and distribute it to millions, without any major corporation or hassle.

So, is Podcasting the hottest thing going in radio? NO.

In fact, it's the hottest thing going AGAINST radio.

And that's what I love about Podcasting.

(Meanwhile, who's buying satellite?) o ooooo
